Let me share a short story that illustrates the topic of this episode, mindfulness.
Hi, I am Pascale Gibon welcome to episode 250 of the Everyday Life Balance Show. Thank you for tuning in.
I was on my way to my local tube station and stood at the traffic lights when I felt like someone was invading my space. In fact, this person had luggage, was in a hurry and thought that squeezing in would get them to the station faster. The problem was that there was not much space at the traffic light to manoeuvre in, as you can imagine, and she acted as if she did not see me.
I am sensitive to energy, and this encounter really felt like someone had invaded my space and pushed me aside. I moved to the side a little bit to create space between us.
I thought she would look towards me to notice what had just happened or apologise, but she seemed unaware.
I am not judging because this incident did not ruin my day. It has taught me a lesson. It has brought to my attention how we stop being mindful of other people when we are in a hurry because we are running late. Faced with this situation, the first thought that comes to mind is “get out of the way, I’m late for work,” “I have a train or plane to catch,” or “this can’t be happening if unexpected interruptions delay us even more.”
This person that stood in front of me was not even aware or mindful of their surrounding. They just charged forward because of their inattention.
The problem with this type of behaviour is the growing habit of not showing consideration for other people and not being mindful of our surroundings.
Think about that for a moment: are there times when you are not mindful of other people or your environment?
The lack of mindfulness happens at a bus stop also. Some people have been waiting for a while for the bus. As soon as it arrives, new travellers who are oblivious to the passengers already waiting barge in and jump the queue.
Mindfulness for others is simply showing respect for other people. Plus to respect the space of each individual is also extremely important.
Respecting others is a reminder for all of us, including me.
Our behaviour cannot be one where we lack respect for others, even when we do it indirectly.
The incidents I have just mentioned also show the ripple effects of not starting the day right. When we are running late for an appointment, for example, the only thing on our mind is to get to our destination no matter what. What drives us to behave in a way that is not mindful of other people is the 'no matter what.'
Here are ten tips to be more mindful of your life and improve your awareness:
I hope you enjoyed this episode. Remember that now is your time to transform your life one step at a time.
