Discover The Eighth Principle Taken From The Yes To Love Philosophy To Overcome Life's Challenges With Ease
Hi I’m Pascale Gibon. Welcome to episode 284 of the Everyday Life Balance Show. Thank you for tuning in and following our series on the Yes! to Love principles taken from the Yes! to Love philosophy.
The principle I will share in this episode is so relevant in today’s world. Indeed, the eighth Yes! to Love Principle is to be and live in the now.
This eighth principle matters because we live in a world where we are constantly reactive to sources of distraction. The distractions I refer to are primarily our mobile phones, social media platforms, video games, internet browsing, television, 24-hour news cycles and current events.
Sometimes, we are unaware of what we do habitually, which stops us from being and living in the now.
The sense of FOMO or Fear Of Missing Out gets in the way of mindful living. Social media platforms exacerbate FOMO. For example, if we don’t get this or that now we might feel we miss out on something big.
FOMO gives us a sense of constant dissatisfaction. It is not a question of having more for the sake of it. It is a question of having more of what you actually need. Therefore to be in the now, you need to ask yourself this question: do I need that course or this new purchase etc.?
Mindfulness is being present in the moment and cultivating non-judgmental awareness of your thoughts and feelings.
What is mindful living, and why is it important when we want to live in the energy of love?
Mindful living is a way of appreciating what is in the present moment. It is a way of life that celebrates the present moment. We are not rushing but observing, absorbing and appreciating what is.
I found myself in this situation last year where I failed to be mindful of the present moment. It was like I was roller skating and did not know how to stop. As a solopreneur, and some of you might relate, I was pushing and pushing, oblivious of what was happening around me. It felt like I could not get my head out of the water to catch my breath and get some air.
This experience was not what we call keeping in balance. Hustling did not feel natural because it felt as if I was suffocating. Consequently, I sensed I needed to step back and refocus on the present moment. I refocused on what mattered the most, to enjoy the moment, and I regained a sense of excitement about my life.
You can listen to my experience in episode 251 of The Everyday Life Balance Show.
Living in the past is another way of escaping from the present moment. When we live in the past, it is usually with a sense of regret over what was, what did not happen back then or what we did not achieve. Therefore, we bring problems from the past into our present reality, and this habit causes suffering.
One process you can learn is how to let go of the habit of living in the past that does not serve you to live a harmonious life. A powerful way I have found to let go of any regret you may have is to make peace with what was or did not happen. Since you cannot relive and change the past, letting go of things beyond your control is liberating.
You are responsible for your human experience. Each moment is precious and filled with gratitude and appreciation for life itself, for life is a gift.
Here are seven ways you can incorporate mindfulness into your daily life if you find being and living in the now challenging:
Breath awareness involves focusing on your breath as it goes in and out. Whenever your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breath. This exercise is potent because our breath is usually shallow, particularly in moments of stress. Mindful breathing helps us appreciate the breath of life. What you do here is reconnect with your breath by breathing in deeply and out slowly with the added intention of releasing and relaxing.
2. Body scan
It involves paying attention to each part of your body. You start from the top of your head and move down to your toes. As you scan your body, notice any sensations or tension in each area. Release any tension by relaxing some more. I often do the body scan exercise. It is an effective mind-body reconnection that works.
3. Walking meditation
I like this exercise because it brings your environment into your awareness. It involves walking slowly and mindfully, paying attention to the physical sensations of each step and your surroundings.
4. Mindful eating
Mindful eating involves paying attention to the taste, texture, and smell of your food as you eat it and the physical sensations of hunger and fullness. Where are my listeners who tend to gulp down their food and often check their mobile phones when they eat? I know most of us have this bad habit. If so, this exercise will work for you and help you be more present.
5. Gratitude practice
I talk intensively about gratitude. I shall remind you that gratitude is the foundation of the Yes! to Love philosophy.
To participate in "The Gratitude Experiment:" 7 weeks of gratitude, you can listen to episodes 222 to 229 of the Everyday Life Balance Show. I also recommend episode 283 of the Yes! to Love principles series.
The gratitude practice involves taking time each day to focus on things you are grateful for, which can help cultivate a sense of appreciation for the present moment. A gratitude practice can be something you do first thing in the morning. You journal or reflect on 10 things you are grateful for in life. It can also be an evening practice whereby you reflect on how grateful you are for the day you had. The gratitude practice can also become a ritual whereby you appreciate mindfully, and at any time, all the goodness that manifests in your life.
6. Mindful listening
Mindful listening involves actively listening to another person, without judgment or distraction, to fully understand their perspective. This practice requires a high level of concentration, understanding and compassion.
7. Smile more
Finally, I want to share one additional mindfulness exercise. It is to smile more.
Science shows that smiling reduces stress as it releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers and mood enhancers.
It can also boost our immune system, improve our mood, lower our blood pressure and enhance our social interactions as it brings happiness and friendliness to others.
A smile is worth a million words. It brings you to the present moment and makes you feel happier.
Do not live life blindfolded: love, observe and appreciate.
I hope you enjoyed this episode. Remember, now is your time to transform your life one step at a time.
To conclude, being and living in the now stops us from worrying about the future and helps us enjoy the present more. It is a sign of appreciation for life itself.
If you feel that you are easily distracted, stressed out or living in the past, I recommend you experiment with the seven mindfulness exercises I have shared to see which ones work best for you.
I look forward to connecting with you next Monday.
Have a fantastic week, take good care and lots of love.
