Enjoying sound sleep is a matter of trying what works best for you.
Hi, I am Pascale Gibon welcome to episode 202 of The Everyday Life Balance Show. Thank you for listening.
I am sure you have people around you who complain about not sleeping well, however, they fail to revisit their lifestyle and do whatever is necessary to improve their sleep quality.
Long term poor quality of sleep affects your brain performance, mental and physical health and alertness.
According to the NHS, one in three people suffers from poor sleep. And women struggle more than men to have a good quality sleep.
There are many recommendations out there regarding improving the quality of your sleep. However, the best remedy is to try them out and see what works best for you.
If you’ve been struggling with your sleep for a while now the following tips might help your body and mind rebalance as you allow the body to re-energise through sound sleep.
There might be some tips out of the list I am about to share with you, you have not considered.
Getting an adequate amount of sleep is essential to allow the body to heal and start the day feeling refreshed as you get up in the morning.
The amount of sleep each one of us needs varies. The estimated average is 8 hours of sleep. The most important thing is to monitor how you feel most of the time when you get out of bed in the morning? Do you feel energised and ready to start the day or do you feel exhausted? If it is the latter this would mean that you need to adjust your sleep pattern. Moreover, consider other factors that might lead to so much fatigue.
If you tend to get up feeling dreadful after a night sleep then the tips I am about to share will be worth trying.
Tip #1 for sound sleep:
Don’t go to bed past 11 o’clock. Going to bed past that time will keep you awake as if you were starting a new day.
If this seems impossible, try at least to go to bed early one night a week and see how you feel when you get up. I have found that I feel amazing, particularly in summer, when I go to bed at 10 pm and get up at 5 or 6 a.m.
Tip #2: Stay away from stimulants late at night like caffeine, too much sugar or late high impact exercise. These stimulants will interfere with the quality of your sleep. They will keep you awake longer than you need to for a good rest. Of course, we all react differently to caffeine. However, if your hands start to shake, you feel suddenly nervous or your heart rate increases this could mean you have had too much caffeine.
Tip #3: Avoid stimulating the mind late at night. For example, let go of worry before bedtime by writing down in a journal whatever worries you or you need to deal with so that it is out of your head and transferred onto paper. Avoid watching scary, stimulating movies or reading stimulating books. It is recommended to read a biography in the evening to calm the mind.
#4: Release the stress of the day and free the mind. You can take a nice shower, go for a walk, listen to peaceful music which includes for example the sound of nature, stretch the body (too much tension in the body will affect physical well-being), meditate, self-reflect or do breathing exercises.
#5: Change your thinking. If you are worried that you are not going to have a good night sleep change your thinking. You need to set the intention instead to have a great night sleep. You condition the mind to activate a good night sleep.
#6: Make sure that your environment is conducive to a sound sleep. If you sleep in a disorderly bedroom this will affect the quality of your sleep. Order brings clarity, thus an orderly environment brings order to the mind instead of confusion. Do you sleep better when the room is dark or natural lighting comes through? If your bedroom is too bright and you have problems falling asleep see whether making the room darker would aid your sleep quality
#7: Check your diet. Review your diet with a qualified nutritionist if you are constantly tired. A nutritionist will help to identify if any nutrient is missing in your diet and provoking poor quality sleep. For example, you might be short in iron or suffering from adrenal depletion due to too much stress.
I hope you have enjoyed the seven tips I have just shared on sound sleep.
As always remember, now is your time to transform your life one step at a time.
Take one relevant tip I have shared with you and see whether it works for you.
I look forward to connecting with you next Monday. Have a fantastic week, take good care and lots of love.
